Nine Ways to Get Selected for the Job You Want!
Even if you have the perfect resume and cover letter, it’s
still possible to get passed over when applying for jobs. If you want to get
selected, pay attention to these nine ways to get selected for the job you
want.
1) The 3 Reasons I Didn’t Submit My Resume to [Big Company]
1. I wanted to work for a small-medium size company.
2. There is no way of knowing what the job entails from
looking at the job listing, which only lists that it is an international start-up
and doesn’t give more information about what it does or what you are supposed
to do as an employee, making me feel like there would be more of high risk
with less certainty of success if I was selected as a candidate.
3. There were limited hours listed, making me believe that it may not be possible to work with other companies or individuals in order to supplement my income during these hours.
4. The compensation package didn't
include any equity in the company or offer any benefits aside from health insurance.
5. If I had been selected as a candidate for this position, but found out that
none of these reasons applied to me, then I might have been willing to submit
my resume.
2) Submitting Your Resume via E-Mails Has Its Disadvantages
As a job seeker, your primary goal is to get noticed and selected by a potential employer. As such, you are typically looking for ways to stand out from all of the other applicants.
One way that people try to achieve this is by submitting their resumes via email. There are many reasons why you should avoid this. To find out what these disadvantages are, read on!
1) Your application may be ignored if it is submitted as an attachment.
2) E-mails have a habit of being deleted when they accumulate, so it's possible that your application could never reach its destination.
3) If You Can't Send an Email, Call Them!
If you can't find a company email or don't know how to search for one, try sending them a LinkedIn message! Plus, if they don't get back to you in a day or two, feel free to call their office number and ask about available positions.

4) There's Still Hope if They Don't Respond Within 24 Hours
I applied for a position last week and so far have not heard back from the company. Nervous? A little, yeah. They probably found someone with more experience who could do it.
Getting turned down is never fun and it can happen at any time. If you haven't been selected for a job, or they don't respond within 24 hours, there are still ways you can improve your chances of success.
1) Read their website thoroughly.
2) Review all requirements for the job.
3) Find out what industry they're in by looking up their competitors' websites, and see if you find any commonalities in how these companies advertise themselves on social media channels.
4) Determine how well suited you are for this type of work- either by doing some research about their company's mission and goals or speaking to people who work there now.
5) Make sure that the location of this new potential employer would be a great fit for your lifestyle and be willing to relocate if necessary.
6) Send them one final message asking
if they received your application before following up again in 48 hours.
5) Ask for Help from Recruiters
Looking for a job is tough. But you don't have to do it alone! There are some steps you can take that will give you an advantage over other applicants.
One of those is finding recruiters in your field and reaching out to them before they find you first. Recruiters often receive dozens of resumes from people who want the same job opening.
If you reach out to them, they may be more likely to remember you and select you as one of their top candidates. So go ahead and ask them what they look for in candidates, what skills are important, and how else someone could get noticed by the company.
If
there's something specific about your background or experience that makes you
an especially good fit, now's the time to mention it. And if there's anything
else about yourself that would help make a case for why YOU should be selected
over someone else - let them know!
If you don't hear back from a company after applying, you should try again with a different email address. Keep in mind that companies only get so many emails per day and if you apply too many times, it might be perceived as spam.
As much as we'd like one single email to secure us an interview, there's no guarantee of anything when applying online. If this is your first time trying out a particular company though.
I'd say keep at it for
at least a few weeks just in case they need time to go through all their
applications. What may have been seen as spam before could now be seen as
high-priority due to a job opening up.
What are some things employers look for? Employers want someone who will fit into the organization well and show enthusiasm about what they do, but also someone who can think on their feet, meet deadlines, problem solve creatively, and demonstrate initiative.
What types of skills do employers
look for? Employers generally look for skills relating to communication (both
written and verbal), social intelligence, mathematical aptitude, or knowledge
of computer software.
7) Show Some Initiative and Contact Them Yourself
Contacting a company is a good way to show your initiative and make sure they know you're interested in them. Ask if they are hiring.
If they are, see what qualifications you'll need in order to apply or ask about their application process. If you want more information or want them to keep you on file, give them your contact information as well as let them know that if anything else opens up, you would like an opportunity.
Finally, find out when
the last day for applications will be so you can plan accordingly.
8) If All Else Fails, Look at Competitor Companies First
The job market can be rough. Sometimes it seems like there's just no work to be found. There are, however, a few things you can do if you find yourself in that position.
If all else fails, start looking at competitor companies. When it comes to selecting a job, more and more employers are focusing on finding candidates from within their own company before reaching out to external applicants.
In some cases, companies will reach out to employees with positions they're trying to fill but don't want the responsibility of advertising the positions externally.
Other times, they'll want someone who has an insider perspective on their company culture and what makes them special. Either way, this is an excellent opportunity for qualified candidates who want nothing more than an inside track into good jobs with great employers.
